Choosing a siding color for your home can be a big decision. It’s right in the public eye of passersby and you want it to look the best it can be. Don’t panic though, we are here to help make this decision a little easier. Here are some things to consider when choosing a color for your home.

Architecture and Color

One of the most important things to consider is that the architecture of your home can lead you in the right direction. For example, if you live in a Colonial style home, the go-to color is white. I don’t make the rules, that’s just how it looks best. If you wanted to spice it up, however, you could add different kinds of accent color. A low country home leans more on the cooler end. Shades of blue with a neutral accent are a good go-to. Tuscan-style homes are often characterized by stone elements. These stones will help guide you in the right direction when it comes to picking a color. Craftsman style definitely benefits from a color palette in the earthy range. Olive greens, deep reds, and even various shades of brown fit nicely in this style.

Color and Scale

Depending on the size of your home, darker colors aren’t always successful. The swatch in your hand might look great but when it scales up, the darkness might become too overwhelming. Smaller homes tend to benefit more from having a darker color than larger homes. If your home has large areas of open surface, you can deemphasize them with a lighter color. If you want the opposite, darker hues are the way to go.

Color and Roof

You want your house to mesh with all its other parts. Your siding should pair well with your roof. If you have a dark room, you might lean towards a lighter siding color, this contrast works successfully. If your roof color varies between different light and dark greys, a neutral color will work the best. Brown roofs offer a variety of nice pairings with them. Different earth tones and off-white will work just fine under a brown roof.

Color and Fitting In

Sometimes in life, conformity is the best thing you can do. In this case: your neighbors and the color of their homes. You may not be planning on staying in your home for the lifespan of your siding so its important to cruise the line normal. As it’s good to work nicely with your siding and roof, it’s good to mesh with the surrounding homes as well. Sticking out like a sore thumb will only draw unnecessary negative attention to yourself. You can have your own unique home, but try and avoid being an eyesore. Use accents to help blend your style.
