Heatwaves & Your Roof. What Do You Need To Know?

While there are many roofing problems to watch out for in the summer, heatwaves expedite these risks. With the sudden increase in temperatures and with the temperatures being so extreme, heatwaves can cause very real problems for your roof, particularly if your roof was not properly ventilated when it was installed.

Here are a few things to watch out for when you’re in the middle of a heatwave.

Poorly Ventilated Attics

If you notice that your attic is not properly ventilated, you can have some real problems on your hands. In general, a poorly ventilated attic can cause your air conditioner to get overworked and can cause failures. For your roof, it can cause blisters and cracks in your shingles. These blisters and cracks can expose your home to water damage. If you believe your attic is not properly ventilated, you should call a roofer immediately to take a look. That call can save you a lot of money not only with your roof but in your overall energy costs and HVAC system.

Expanding Joists and Rafters

Heat causes wood to expand, which means during the summer, the joists and rafters in your roof expand. While roofs are designed to handle this expansion, a heatwave can cause significant expansion, which roofs are not designed to handle. The biggest damage will be done to the flashing on the roof. Damaged flashing can allow water to get into your home at seams or valleys in your roof.

Shrinking Shingles

The last potentially damaging aspect of a heatwave is the shrinking of shingles. The overlapping of shingles should allow for this shrinking, but when shingles shrink more than expected, such as in a heatwave, it can cause the nails to pop. This can cause the shingle to lift, which can then expose your home to water damage.

Heatwaves provide unique weather conditions that are hard to account for. Unlike wind, rain, snow, and sleet, the potential damage from heat is less tangible. That does not make it any less damaging. If you have an older roof or experience any major ventilation issues, you should consult a roofer in South Jersey to take a look at your roof after a heatwave.
